I thought the dynamic between the two wolves was described in a strange manner, but I think the way it’s been expressed as the beginning of the cubs was very well done. I love the tension that’s described in different events and encounters and I think the inclusion of them at all is well executed. I absolutely love the description of the one month old’s world around him. Rather, the lack there of, for now.

I absolutely adore the continual character development and the different environments that create it. I love how it describes struggles of learning against instinct and the loyalty and love that allowed such lessons to be learned. I struggled earlier with the weight of the pain expressed in earlier chapters, I didn’t want to read any more; but my only struggle now is the weight of my eyelids. I can’t put it down!

It continued as rough as it had been. It genuinely made me cry how it described the fear, suspicion, and hatred expressed by a tortured and abused being when met with kindness for the first time. The genuine discussion for whether or not to kill the ferocious animal just because it knows nothing more than ferocity. I love how much development across multiple characters has been expressed in the last three chapters.

The hardest chapters to get through so far. I especially hated the last one. There was subtle racism, a character downfall from manipulation that felt as tragic as the betrayal he would commit. The consistent animal abuse in these chapters was unlike anything described before. The persistent loyalty only met with betrayal and consistent sadistic abuse again and again in this chapter is horrifically tragic.

The past two chapters had really good progression. I do love the pacing of this book, but two subject matters, although necessary, have made it a hard read so far. Personal matters aside, the physical and mental development, the situations and struggles that caused them, and the strategic and elegant expression of the passage of time in the past two chapters has been fantastic.

I really like how it describes the struggle of isolation and bullying as a catalyst for deception and sneakiness. It sounded a lot like “The Ranger’s Apprentice” for a few pages. I really love how visceral it described the longing for freedom in the woods and the reluctance to obey instead.

I love how everything the little wolf is learning about is described as if it is one living unknown, and he is learning about different parts of it and how to interact with the idea of things being unknown.
