Several readers think Ellie is naive - I don't. The harsh indifference with which she is treated by employers in London - 50s is exactly how I was treated in 2010 + in Cyprus. I was a good 20/ 30 years older than Ellie but the cruel dismissal and utter lack of interest in her or her survival was exactly the world I faced. I've always thought Cyprus is at least 60 years behind Europe. A truly backwards 3rd world.
