Lots of notable things about this so far. One is that for a simple narrative style, it packs a remarkable amount of successful character writing. The different personalities are so clear and vibrant for the small number of words used. Likewise how large scale the story feels despite the simplicity of storytelling. The power struggles remind me of my recent reading of Roman history. As does the massive death tolls.

A new storyline begins with more murder and I believe a famous line bowing revenge: "The two of us cannot share the same sky."

First major villain meets his end and unsurprisingly things don't get better. A seemingly small decision not to give amnesty specifically to two of his followers will prove to be the cause of everything to come. I still have to try and get my head around the huge numbers of people involved. And the death toll everywhere is enormous.

A big challenge for readers in English is names. Romanised names hit you with seeming similarities where there are none in the Chinese characters. Look at these two names I had to keep apart in one scene: Huang Zhu and Zhang Hu. And the text often gives you loads of names at once, to give the narrative a sense of historical document.

Guan Yu's hero moment, where he goes off to face the unbeatable henchman Hua Xiong, and defeats him 'off-screen', coming back with his head as trophy before his warmed wine has gone cold - pure cinema!
