Far more than a history of Johnson, this is a history of poor America. The drudgery of poor farm women is unbearable to think about in our automated times. See Chapter 25. Think about a life without electricity. There is far more involved than turning on lights. The hauling of water by hand was huge. Johnson would not help with this chore, and it fell on his mother to do everything to keep the household going.
