This is just astonishingly bad and at this point I'm blaming it mostly on the translation. The actual English here is perhaps the poorest, least apt, most awkward I've ever read in a translation published by a professional press. It's just inexplicably bad, sometimes to the point of being laughable. The soapy, melodramatic manner in which Setouchi recounts Noe Ito's brief life doesn't help. Utter failure.
