(Audio) I want this book to have been written and published in English. It feels important. I also want to be more engaged in/moved by it — except the filmmaking stuff = great — and to be less disappointed by the style. Maybe I’ve just read (or listened to) too much New Yorker fiction stuff and I’m sick of it atm.

It’s not that the style is that style; it’s that it’s weird to read a Vietnamese novel in New Yorker style. But I guess if the author lives in the US literary world most of his days, that’s going to happen. I suppose it’s an interesting layer of irony, given the material, and to some extent illustrates his point about Vietnamese people being a kind of mash-up of influences from colonisers
