As with the other Scott novel I've read (Ivanhoe), it starts out slow and really picks up after the halfway point. The English is certainly challenging, but also rewarding. I also had the privilege to just happen to finish the novel while visiting Scotland, including entirely by chance locations mentioned in the book such as Loch Lomond and Aberfoil.
