I have noticed a similar occurrence in many Holocaust survivors’ stories. The head of the household (re: father, though sometimes the mother too) being too stubborn/blind to what is going on and refusing to leave with/let their family go to safety. It’s frustrating that those in the family who wanted to go didn’t out of honoring the one in charge who said “no”. Usually at horrible expense.
