Priye had learned from Elder Sister that humans could smile with all their teeth and think it was friendly, and sometimes it was. Sometimes when humans smiled with all their teeth they liked you and gave you a little piece of yarn to play with.

Elder Sister didn’t explain it that way, of course. But Priye knew words were meant for humans to bite each other with. Because words were powerful and human teeth and claws weren’t sharp enough to really bite and scratch properly, so they needed other ways of yowling.

Different humans used different words and a lot of them didn’t go together and if you said them wrong people laughed at you, both human people and cat people. Or sometimes they got angry about using the wrong words, or saying them wrong, or using the wrong set of them, or tangling up words from different sets.

TL *Humaning the Best She Can* But other times humans smiled with their teeth and said words that were not true, as though they thought you didn’t have thoughts just because you didn’t use their words. Or as though they forgot you had a nose to tell you they smelled of lying.

TL *Humaning the Best She Can* If their words were all tangled up and you had to use the right ones depending on who you were talking to, but there was no way to see which words the human you were looking at wanted, and even if you guessed right they could be telling you the wrong things – either on purpose or because they didn’t know better, or even just because the words were made for the humans’ world-seeing and catfolk saw and smelled and thought differently?

TL *Humaning the Best She Can* Words were a tricky clawful pain to handle and Priye was tired of them biting her.

Cats were so much more honest, when they weren’t using words. You knew where you stood when someone was purring. You knew where you stood when they were hissing or yowling or scratching too, of course, and sometimes that changed very fast and you had to be ready to run, but ears and eyes and bodies and smells were a lot harder to lie with than words.
