Possibly one of my favorite portions of the book. Such simple domestic joy intermixed with such listlessness and anxiety. Contemplations on the soul of Russia, and the nobility's place within it.

Love these characters. Final stretch, will finish by All Souls Day, and what a fitting day that will be.

Myra wrote: "you're making me want to read this. do you recommend starting with this or anna karenina?"I started with Anna, amazing novel and I highly recommend. Anna Arkadyevna Karenina is probably still the most complex character I have ever seen in fiction. Anna is much darker than War and Peace, though, as it is a tragedy. War and Peace will take at least a month to complete, likely closer to two. Anna will take about half that time.
Read the descriptions for each, and start with the one that appeals to you the most at the moment. Anna is probably easier to get into, but your mileage may vary. Anna and War and Peace are also very different books, so one of them failing to click for you does not mean the other will also. Also, find the right translation. For Anna, I like Pevear and Volokhonsky. For War and Peace, I preferred Anthony Briggs.
mmm thank you for the thoughtful response! I’ve heard good things about the P&V translation for Anna.. I might start there.
