I’ve noticed the author does not like to leave dialogue by itself and feels compelled to add an action after everything anyone says, so every exchange is like this:

“Hello,” said character, looking through a magazine.

“Hi,” said other character, not meeting my gaze.

“This is awkward,” said the first character, running her hands through her hair.

“I know,” I said, tossing a ball.
