Since the narratives and histories of part one are survival stories, they are not quite as upsetting as I feared; many called their survival a miracle.

The first section is narratives of survival and of coming to Canada. One unexpected theme is the fear of the Korean conflict mushrooming into another war that would engulf Europe, the stated reason for at least a couple of the interviewees to have chosen Canada. Though for many others there was no choice.
