Dark and grotesque, but not in a juvenile way, more in a “I’ve witnessed real violence and insanity, and it was mind-shattering” way.
Not sure I recommend this collection. Perhaps if you’re a Nobel prize for literature completionist, or interested in the minds of Japanese men after WW2, it’s a semi-worthy add to a reading list. Otherwise it’s likely best to search for complex humanity elsewhere.
