“ 'He has got no good red blood in his body,' said Sir James.

'No. Somebody put a drop under a magnifying-glass and it was all semicolons and parentheses,' said Mrs. Cadwallader. " (p 65)

"And there’s none more ready to nurse you than your own
sister and your own nieces, if you’d only say the word. There’s
Rebecca, and Joanna, and Elizabeth, you know."

“Ay, ay, I remember—you’ll see I’ve remembered ’em all—all dark and
ugly. They’d need have some money, eh? There never was any beauty in
the women of our family"

On a less serious note, Mary Garth is what the kids call "bae"

" 'Oh, Mrs. Cadwallader, I don’t think it can be nice to marry a man with a great soul.'
'Well, my dear, take warning. You know the look of one now; when the next comes and wants to marry you, don’t you accept him.' ” (p 51)

"The objectionable puppy, whose nose and eyes were equally black and expressive, was thus got rid of, since Miss Brooke decided that it had better not have been born" (p 28). Some interesting symbolism at play with Sir James and his remonstrated pup as well as the recurring "Exactly". Glad the text is taking a turn for the comical, rather than simple the didactic.

Christopher Antimie "The betrothed bride must see her future home, and dictate any changes that she would like to have made there. A woman dictates before marriage in order that she may have an appetite for submission afterwards. And certainly, the mistakes that we male and female mortals make when we have our own way might fairly raise some wonder that we are so fond of it."

Maybe "comedy" was the wrong descriptor, but the narrator is certainly a character of infinite jest. @Grace

Grace Cimpan Yess, the narration really is a character of its own! I think there are multiple reasons why Middlemarch doesn’t get the same film treatment that Jane Austen’s books get, but I think the strongest argument is simply that you can never truly capture the spirit of Middlemarch on the big screen because so much of the book’s charm comes from the narrator.

Grace Cimpan That being said, I think Mrs. Cadwallader would shine on the silver screen. She literally steals every scene she’s in 😂

Christopher Antimie Agreed on both accounts. Mr Fred is showing some promise as well 👌

Grace Cimpan YAYY YOU’VE MET FRED!! If you’ve been introduced to Fred, then I think it’s safe to say that you’ve met a good bulk of the characters who live in the town of Middlemarch. So now I can officially say…WELCOME TO MIDDLEMARCH!! I’m so stoked loll
