i have this discussion over and over again... especially for summer reading. What is their objective? You'd think summer reading would be a time they are trying to instill the love of reading for reading's sake... a time to relax, sit on the beach and read.... therefore, no one should be reading the odessey or the grapes of wrath. torture them with those books when they are already being tortured in school. all the great contemporary books out there, and this is what they come up with?

of the people whose care the book fell to and what they did
to discover its secrets. When you hold any object in your
hands that's been travelling for centuries, you hold all those unimagined stories...an old pottery shard...they're excavating those artifacts now at Valley Forge that may have been brought there by Martha Washington...the woman
in People of the Book gets how incredible the stories are by the clues left behind, a stain, a feather...exciting! One of the books in the horse series for Andy has a cow funeral.
Those books may be more in line with her experience than the
assigned books. We've all been there at that age and done that! So I empathize with her dilemma...Big Time.
