Reading like an edgy YA, I think it will evolve. Minimal editing issues, impressive in a first book. One storytelling err stands out... In a memory Emily says her "first year of junior high" then a few pages over she says she is 15. Minor but my first reaction was to be appalled if Emily was 12 or 13 (15 is bad enough), such a small thing changes the interpretation & that may not be the last of the memory.

The way things are stated sometimes is odd. Thinking the author might not be from the US I creeped on her goodreads user profile (not author profile), sure enough Australia.
