At the moment I'm working on two very different novels. The first is about 20k words along and is pretty much plotted out. There are some tricky bits left to figure out, but there's hope.
The second comes from a broad (alternate history) idea I've had for several years, but couldn't find the right framework for an actual story. A couple months ago I had a flash of inspiration and things started to quickly come together.
Both stories explore moral and ethical dilemmas.

I currently just started reading the non-fiction "Imperial Cruise" by James Bradley, which concerns Sec'y of War W.H. Taft's public trip to Asia to secretly carve up the continent.
Freshly added to my pile is "Life of Pi", which I bought when I and a visiting Canadian friend of our mutual acquaintance were at Joseph-Beth in Rookwood. I turned her on the "Arsonist's Guide to Writer's Homes..." and I felt guilty about not buying anything.
I'm also hoping to be a beta reader for my writer friend Wendy Vogel's next Horizon Alpha series. Dinosaurs in space! YA is not my genre, but I learn a lot from Wendy.
Depending on things I may get some more reading done. I can't devote too much time to reading, because I've got to get some writing done too. It's all about balance.

Ignore the voices (especially in your own head) that say you aren't good enough or you have nothing of value to say about anything. You may not be good enough. You may in fact have nothing of value to say, but do we really know whether that is true or not? Time will tell. Think of the writers who were ignored or ridiculed, but then were reconsidered. So just write. Don't worry about that other stuff. Most of the world wants to tear people down. So ignore that. Write so that the inner voice can be heard.

I'll change this to "What's the best thing about writing?" because I'm a bit suspicious of my own ego getting to full of itself at the notion of being a "writer". With that said I think the best thing about it is the creative process itself. To me writing is about taking "What I did on my summer vacation" and wrapping it in context and meaning and stucture. Or at least trying to do that. The result is greater than the sum of its parts. Hopefully.
