The best thing about being a writer is that I get to write how I feel on paper. And if I don't know how I feel, I can write and write until I know what that feeling is. Writing allows us to get very microscopic about feelings that we sometimes can't share in real life. But when these writings become part of a book, song, poem, comic, story, that is shared with an audience, it can resound in the hearts and minds of people from all backgrounds.

I prefer to write when the impetus for a writing project is organic. It has to be something that I want to spend a lot of time thinking about. Then I break that bigger project down into bite size tasks. I write best in the morning with coffee, so I usually wake up around 6am and write for at least an hour. Some days it's more, and some days it just an hour. When it comes to drawing a weekly comic, I just force myself to do it.

If I get stuck on something, I move to another part of the project. If I'm really stuck, I switch activities. I find that when I do an activity that is automatic, like driving or washing dishes, ideas or solutions will come to the problem I've been working on. When this happens, I make sure to write it down immediately. I scribble notes on scraps of paper, napkins, whatever I can find. I also carry a pen and notebook in my purse if I'm out. I keep my little notebooks and scraps of papers for years so when I use something I've jotted down, I make sure to put a check mark next to it.
