Like most people, my life is pretty mundane. That's why I read and write fiction!
However, a fun romantic story could be based on the backwards "boy next door" hooks up with "rebel bad girl" relationship between my husband and I. Usually, it's the nice girl going after the bad boy, but ours is topsy-turvy.
Would you read that book?

The answer to this question changes as I read more books. For a few years, however, I've been pretty enamored with Gabby and Clay from Melissa Haag's YA Paranormal series JUDGEMENT OF THE SIX. She's working on the final book in the series now, and I know I'll be sad to see their story finished.
Why are they my favorite? Because they are completely an odd couple, yet totally devoted to each other. Gabby is still too young to commit, she thinks, and she wants to finish her college education, live a "human" life. All this mess with werewolf pairs and the Judgements is really messing with her well-laid plans.
Part of their appeal is that they both come from sad upbringings, but they've become strong, independent people anyway. I love characters who overcome a difficult past and forge ahead like they have as much right to be happy and successful as the next person. And, Clay is the epitome of the strong, silent type (annoying when you're a talker like Gabby or me, but appealing at the same time).

The book I'm working on now (in the beta reading stage) came from answering a bunch of what if questions. Most of the time, I use this method to generate ideas for plot and conflict in a story when I get stuck. In the case of Doomsday Dragon, I wondered, "what if there was a dragon trapped in the center of the earth?" I answered it and that sparked the next: "what if the son of a volcanologist had special powers that might help him connect with dragons?" And the questions continued for several notebook pages. At the end, I had a solid idea for the premise, characters and conflict for that novel.

Don't be "aspiring." Be a writer. Yep. Sit down and write. Pencil on paper, fingers on keyboard, whatever mode makes your heart sing.
When you're not writing, read. Read the genre you write. Read the classics. Read things you hate - and figure out why you don't like them. Read what you love - and dissect it to understand how the author made you love it.
Write, read, repeat.

Other than wearing whatever I want to work? Soaking in solitude while my fingers tap dance along the keys, chasing my imagination until the story is pinned to the page. I love being creative, dreaming up problems and characters who will solve them.

I'm currently working on a young adult adventure story for another anthology by a different publisher. Think Cowboys versus Aliens - but low-tech teenagers.
