My advice for anyone who wants to make the jump from "I like to write" to "published author" is to embrace discipline. Finding time to write is just step one. There's a whole ream of business stuff which will also need to be taken care of, even if you get picked up by a traditional publisher. Get yourself into a group with other writers so that you can learn from them. Life is too short to figure it all out for yourself.

The best thing about being a writer is telling stories. I make up stories all the time, amusing myself by coming up with fantastical backstories for the people I meet. (My gym is full of spies and broken hearts and people hiding all manner of secrets.) Having the privilege of sharing stories with other people is just icing on the cake.

I plot like I'm a villain in a Bond film. Most of the time, writer's block is not knowing what happens next. So before I start to write, I need to know what the ending is and where I'm starting. From there, I can usually figure out most of the middle steps, although not brilliant middle steps. I've found that if I keep pushing through, sooner or later brilliant answers will come to me.
