The best thing about being a writer is telling stories. I make up stories all the time, amusing myself by coming up with fantastical backstories for the people I meet. (My gym is full of spies and broken hearts and people hiding all manner of secrets.) Having the privilege of sharing stories with other people is just icing on the cake.
