What helps me is taking a Read & Critique "class." It's actually a group, but the instructor is paid. The group is amazing & the instructor is very knowledgable & supportive.
Knowing I have to submit each week keeps me writing.
Nothing else I've tried (college courses, writing coaches & groups I've started as well as non-credit classes) has worked.
I think each of us has to find what works for US. KEEP TRYING UNTIL YOU FIND IT.

Book 1 has been out since 2020. Here's a little info about it:
Sherrie Miranda's "Crimes & Impunity in New Orleans" follows the dramatic story of naive, sheltered Shelly going to “The Big Easy” to prepare for El Salvador, but has no idea she will encounter sexism and witness racism as well as illegal activities by government agents.

Review: Shelly’s journey in “the city that care forgot.”Sherrie Miranda’s new novel “Crimes and Impunity in New Orleans” puts the reader into a whirlwind of political protests, abusive police, sexist attitudes towards women, and “good old boys” racism in 1980’s New Orleans. Miranda’s second novel follows Shelly, the young northerner, as she quickly finds out that she “isn’t in Kansas anymore” while encountering a slew of picturesque, colorful characters. Reading her book makes you wonder if justice and respect for blacks, immigrants, and women can be reality in America.
In Book 2, "Secrets & Lies in El Salvador," Shelly goes to El Salvador to photograph Salvadorans in the midst of the civil war there. She becomes the keeper of many people's secrets & lies.

They don't HAVE to be read in order. But you will understand the protagonist better if you read the books in order.
That said, my debut novel is Book 2 so many people read that first & still enjoyed #CIINO.

I just started working with a woman who has gotten 3-6K reviews for other authors, but I need to wait & see if she's able to do the same for me.

Thank you for this question!
Believe it or not, about 75% of the book is true!
New Orleans is a roller coaster ride. It's both beautiful & ugly, both kind & unjust, moral & immoral.
"Crimes & Impunity in New Orleans" is based on my own experiences in 1980s New Orleans. Protesting the wars, witnessing police brutality, the sexism. That's all real.
Shelly didn't "save" anyone, but almost everything else actually happened while I lived in New Orleans.
Come ride the roller coaster with Shelly as she navigates trying to survive while trying to earn the right to go to El Salvador as a photographer.
"Crimes & Impunity in New Orleans" follows the dramatic story of naive, sheltered Shelly going to “The Big Easy” to prepare for El Salvador, but has no idea she will encounter sexism and witness racism as well as illegal activities by government agents.

I would go back in time. Not to a fictional place, but to a real place I could write about. Maybe Argentina before Pinochet. Or Germany before Hitler.
Or early Italy.
So many choices! Too many to just choose one.

#CIINO is 80% true, but I don't want to write memoir. Some things in life are best kept secret.
Shelly is my alternate personality. She's braver & smarter than me (at least at that young age!) I plan to write several books about Shelly. I've lived an amazing life & love the idea of putting all my stories into a book.
Thank for asking!

Much of my writing is about my own life & experiences.
#CIINO though is about 80% true.
Life is definitely a mystery. I could never have imagined ending up here & having 2 books written & published.

I love Marni Freedman's advice of "Plot & Pour." She believes that if you just write without any planning, you will get lost in the middle. If you just plan without writing ... well, you'll never get anywhere.
I have found her method to work very well.
Best wishes to all the writers out there!

I am working on "Love & Loss in Upstate New York." Shelly is back home but with a husband & baby. All she wants is to be independent but that is not possible at this time in her life.
"Crimes & Impunity in New Orleans." is the prequel to SLIES. It deals with a lot of the political activities of the 1980s: racism, sexism & the FBI trying to prove that the peace activists are actually terrorists. This story is about 75% true.

"Secrets & Lies in El Salvador" takes place during the brutal civil war in El Salvador in the early 80s. There is a lot of historical information that helps the reader see how 50 years of injustice brought the country to the place it is in the present time of the novel.

I have several ways that I get inspired to write. In the case of this debut novel, I often looked at photographs taken of the Salvadoran civil war. It was (and likely, still is) the most photographed war in history.
I also did short (5 min.) meditations on the characters, then I wrote in their voice. Fortunately I eventually figured out how to keep their voices in the novel. You will see what I mean when you read it!
Sometimes I listened to Latin American protest music which inspired me to give a more cultural and creative slant to the writing.

I carried the idea for "Secrets & Lies in El Salvador" for more than 30 years. Of course, the final outcome was much different than the original ideas I had. I protested the U.S. funded war in El Salvador and met many Salvadorans, including one that I married. (We are divorced, but I have remained close to the rest of his family.) In fact, my ex-in-laws and all their friends are very proud that they inspired me to write a story about their country.
