I imagine an interesting scene, even if it has nothing to do with the book I'm writing. Then I describe the scene as if it were a play or movie. Many times, I'll find a place for it somewhere in the manuscript.

An old saying in Anesthesiology is 'The job is 99% boredom and 1% terror.' Though, I love being an Anesthesiologist, writing serves as a creative outlet that has none of the above.

1) Write! Don't write necessarily for publishing but sit down (or walk) and write.
2) Work on finding a flow and form for your prose that you are comfortable with. By doing so, you will develop a style that readers can identify.
3) Publishing a book is a team sport. Find friends, colleagues, book lovers or anyone else who will take the time to read your manuscripts and provide an honest opinion. Then, set your pride aside, and consider their criticism.
4) Find a good editor.
5) Particularly, if you self-publish, read the book 1,000 times before you submit it for publication. Chances are there will still be errors. Actually, consider reading it 1,005 times.
6) I found identifying an audience, helped inspire and motivate me. (See the answer to the first question.)

I envision an interesting scene, and then describe it. If I like it, I'll find a way to incorporate that chapter into the story.

During my nearly 20 years as an Anesthesiologists, I've worked with wonderful and dedicated hospital staff. These men and women place the well being of their patients above all else, even at the end of long, difficult shifts. As I was passing through the break room four years ago, I found one of the nurses reading a novel. I asked her about it and she explained the plot and then described the characters she liked to read about. At that moment I decided to complete a book that had those elements, in hopes that it would be entertaining to the staff.
