Two things are in process. The first is the sequel to Heart Break, Break In. Biologists, this one is for you! It will feature a neuroscience based plot and, of course, the deepening friendship of Swift and Jameson.
The second project is just being sketched out, but I am very much looking forward to starting it.

My favorite part of being a writer is getting to know my characters. I *love* Izzy Swift. I love that she's determined, if impatient, and excels at a job that she loves. I love that she's, in the common parlance, BFF's with her former training officer, Hector Rodriguez, a wise-cracking, goodnatured, bear of a man. I love that Izzy challenges her new partner, the caring, reserved, but deeply principled Mark Jameson. And I love the fact that, even if they don't agree, the characters care deeply for one another and for the citizens that they protect. In retrospect, I'm glad that the I ended up liking my characters because, when I'm writing, I end up spending 8 hours a day (or more) with them!

A key aspect of my job as a scientist is to figure out new things. Are there new ways of using technology? Can I use established scientific principles to create new technology? Do these data, that don't make sense within the paradigm in my field, mean that a new discovery is about to be made? If I change the parameters of my search, will I uncover a different, new answer? Usually, this type of brainstorming is focused on one goal--how can I discover something new that will improve the lives of others?
To get inspired to write, I do the same thing: I sit with a cup of coffee, read some articles in my field, and then brainstorm, but from a different point of view. Instead of using discovery to help others, however, my 'villains' (they don't think of themselves that way) use discovery to help themselves, whether it's to gain power, money, or fame, to hide secrets that they want to stay hidden, or for personal agendas like love or revenge.
I'll admit a secret! Other than getting to know each of my characters, this sort of brainstorming is my favorite part of writing!
