A key aspect of my job as a scientist is to figure out new things. Are there new ways of using technology? Can I use established scientific principles to create new technology? Do these data, that don't make sense within the paradigm in my field, mean that a new discovery is about to be made? If I change the parameters of my search, will I uncover a different, new answer? Usually, this type of brainstorming is focused on one goal--how can I discover something new that will improve the lives of others?
To get inspired to write, I do the same thing: I sit with a cup of coffee, read some articles in my field, and then brainstorm, but from a different point of view. Instead of using discovery to help others, however, my 'villains' (they don't think of themselves that way) use discovery to help themselves, whether it's to gain power, money, or fame, to hide secrets that they want to stay hidden, or for personal agendas like love or revenge.
I'll admit a secret! Other than getting to know each of my characters, this sort of brainstorming is my favorite part of writing!
