Jane McGarry I have always loved the classic "knights and castles" adventure stories. I started mulling over ideas on this theme and asking myself a bunch of "what if..." questions. The plot for Not Every Girl sprang up pretty quickly from that. I was eager to write a story with a strong heroine as its main character.
Jane McGarry With two kids, it is hard to write exactly at the moments I am "inspired", I have to set writing time in my schedule and stick to it. Most days, I am itching to get all the ideas out of my head onto paper, but on the tough days, I put on some music, or read an excerpt from a book that moved me, or just start jotting random thoughts down until something clicks.
Jane McGarry I am currently working on the sequel to Not Every Girl. I had the concept for the story for a while now, but thinking of a title may be the death of me! Lol!
Jane McGarry I have two pieces of advice,

One - as simple as it sounds, write. There will never be a "perfect time" to do it. You can always go back and fix anything you write, but unless you get it on paper, the ball will never be rolling.

Two - in this day and age, you have to have a good understanding of how the publishing industry works. While you are writing, make sure you spend time researching the business side of writing.
Jane McGarry The best thing about being a writer is having the freedom to create different worlds and explore being different people. Working in my PJ's is nice too. :)
Jane McGarry Normally, if I am not sure where to go next in the story, I put the work down and let the question simmer in my head. Most of the time, a solution pops into my head out of the blue when I am doing the most ordinary tasks - grocery shopping, working out, driving in the care- or just when I am drifting off to sleep. Even though I walked away, my sub-conscious is always working on the problem. Sometimes I just need to get out of my own way.I try to keep a notebook or my phone handy to jot down the ideas when they come, then, when I return to writing I have them as a reference.
