I have two pieces of advice,
One - as simple as it sounds, write. There will never be a "perfect time" to do it. You can always go back and fix anything you write, but unless you get it on paper, the ball will never be rolling.
Two - in this day and age, you have to have a good understanding of how the publishing industry works. While you are writing, make sure you spend time researching the business side of writing.
