I was looking for a way to bridge the gap between "Lost in Suburbia" when may kids were little, and my upcoming book, "Lost in Midlife" when I become an Empty Nester (Oops, I just revealed the theme of the book I said I wasn’t;t going to talk about yet). I had the idea to tell the story of that time period through the life of our dog, Riley. He said it was okay with him, so I did it.

I have three books on deck. The one that is being published right now is as yet unnamed because I’m waiting to wake up at the aforementioned time of 3am with sudden inspiration for its name. However, I can tell you that it picks up where my last book, Lost in Suburbia takes off. My kids are older and we get a dog and I experience the joys and challenges of motherhood and the passage of time through the life of the dog. I’ll tell you about the other two books when we get this one on the shelves!

I’ll tell you the same thing my fourth grade teacher told me: Read, Read, READ! Read all kinds of genres and a variety or authors. It will increase your vocabulary, teach you about story structure, and make you a more interesting person who will have more interesting things to say when you’re at a party and people ask what you do and you don’t want to tell them you are an out of work author.

I love being able to set my own hours and write when the spirit moves me. Sadly, sometimes my spirit gets moved at 3am, which kind of takes the fun out of sleeping… and writing. The other good thing about being a writer is the money. Not the money I actually earn, but the idea that I could earn that money if all the planets line up and Jupiter is in the seventh house and I can convince enough people to buy my books.

When I’m writing a column, I try to write several weeks ahead so if I have a week where my mind is just a complete blank, I have a back-up. When I’m writing a book, I always have an outline, so if I’m stumped in one section, I’ll just put it to the side for a while and write another part of the story. If that doesn’t work, I’ll just eat some chocolate. It doesn’t help the writer’s block but it does make me feel better.

It was a dark and stormy night. I got the numbers back from my first day of book sales and I sold nothing.

I am going to sound like such a typical romantic but I have to go with Pride and Prejudice. I go back to that book over and over again like comfort food, when I need to revive my heart and indulge my soul. Naturally I would love to spend a day in Elizabeth Bennett’s shoes, but I am undecided if I would prefer to be in those shoes pre or post-Darcy. I don’t think I’d like to spend too much time there because I like a hot shower and the idea of being bound in a corset is as appealing as to me as walking twenty blocks in New York City in high-heeled shoes that are a size too small, which I have done and did not enjoy one bit. But one day in Jane Austen’s time would be wonderful!

I just finished Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson and I absolutely loved it. So many great, relatable themes packed into a fantastical premise. Piled up on my nightstand are Ask Again, Yes!, In Five Years, A Spot of Bother, Oona Out of Order, Naamah, The Last Flight, and The Immortalists, among others!
