Hi, Alan.
Blimey-there's a question. I loved his older, pulp-horror stuff like The Fog and The Dark. The first book of his I read was Lair, which still holds a special place in my heart, but I think Nobody True is such a 'different' book of his that it has to be number 1 for me.

A very hard question this, but after much deliberation, I think it has to be Pip and Estella in Great Expectations. This was the first Dickens book I read, and I loved it. I hated Estella at first, I just wanted her to love Pip like he loved her, but as the story develops, I began to understand her a little. The final chapter hints at a possible happy ending but is not gushing, and leaves it up to the reader to make a decision about what will happen to them. I like to think they made it work, romantic fool that I am.

Hi. That's tough because I change my mind a lot. I always loved classic rock-stuff like Kiss, Queen, early Maiden and Ozzy. At the minute I'm into Thunder, a band I was listening to twenty years ago. Have to say Magnum as well, one of my favourite bands when I was a teenager back in the day, as Tony Clarkin allowed me to use some of his lyrics at the beginning of the re-edited version of Minstrel's Bargain. But I also like old style swing, bit of 80's stuff too.
How about yourself? Any particular stuff you're into?

It came from my love of James Herbert books and my passion for rock music. Once those two factors were set then it was simply a case of working on a story that I would enjoy reading myself. If I hadn't written Minstrel's Bargain I would have bought it to read because I love horror stories and I love Rock music.

My inspiration as a writer came mostly from the late great James Herbert. I loved the way his stories came together and usually ended up with some apocalyptic conclusion. But writers of other genres such as Derek Robinson, Bernard Cornwall and even Alastair Maclean and Desmond Bagley have influenced my work. When I first wrote Minstrel's Bargain I simply had a story that I fleshed out at the typewriter. I didn't actually plan it, that came later on. I think I just like to write. Its something I'm hoping to do more and more.

I'm working on another manuscript that I wrote decades ago. Its more of a supernatural thriller than an out and out horror story but I think it has some legs. Although its going to take a lot of re-writing I think it could be ok. I will have to wait and see whether anyone is interested in it once its completed.

I don't know if I qualify to answer this. But I think never give up is the answer here. It took 22 years for Minstrel's Bargain to see the light of day because I gave up on it. The recent emergence of small publishers like Bloodhound Books means that there are more ways than ever of getting your book out there and they often deal in niche markets. Also-make sure your script is as polished as it can be. It makes editing later much easier. And always say thank you!

Its still so new at the minute. I still don't feel like a writer even though the book is on sale. But having my friends and family rally round me and wishing me success with it is the best thing

Lots of coffee and listening to Planet Rock!
