Thanks for the message. Yes, I would love to review Jay's new book! I enjoyed *Analog Church* and have *Analog Christian* on my reading list.

Well, I just finished Grit by Angela Duckworth, and I am currently reading the classic dystopian novel 1984 by George Orwell, as well as a book on creation and environmental ethics by Dave Bland and Sean Webb.
The rest of my summer reading list will probably include Daring Greatly by Brene Brown, a Cormac McCarthy novel or two, and a couple of books on systematic theology or preaching.

If I get stumped, I get away from what I am writing and do something else. I find that the change of scenery and activity helps get the creative juices flowing again. It may be going to a movie, a baseball game, reading something else, or playing with my kids...just something different than writing.

I think the best thing about being a writer is being able to influence someone else. Michael Hyatt calls this "generosity." I've got some things to share, and my day-to-day audience is small. However, through a book or an article, I can reach a larger audience.
Just the other day, I found out that I had been cited for the first time in another author's book. I'm not exactly sure if he liked what I wrote, yet it was still humbling to know that he had read my work and decided to use it. Hopefully, someone reading his book will search out for that piece that I wrote and be influenced by it.

When I first started writing, I got a lot of advice that was technical, that I had to write a certain way...a way that I personally found really boring. Then a writer friend of mine encouraged me to write what I wanted to read in a way that made we want to read it.
That would be my advice for any aspiring writer: Write something that you would want to read, and write it in a way that you would want to read. Your book might not become a best-seller, yet it will reach an audience that will be thankful you put your book out there.

Currently, I am working on three projects. First, I am working on an essay for a educational blog that I write for. Second, I am working on the manuscript for a devotional study of the book of Colossians in the Bible. Third, I am working on a manuscript for a theological study of vocation.

One of two things happens: Either I get an idea for an article or book that really clings to my brain. The only way to get it out, I have found, is to write about it. The second way that I get inspired is from the mundane of my day-to-day life. Sometimes a conversation with a friend, a scene from a movie, or something that I read will spark an idea that I want to pursue.

Well, I had been a chaplain for a couple of years, and I was asked to teach a course on pastoral care. After the college hired me full-time and a couple of pieces of that material got published, I decided to turn the lecture material into a manuscript. I thought it would be helpful, especially to ministers in my denomination, to have a easy-to-read, practical guide for this difficult area of ministry.
