Well, I had been a chaplain for a couple of years, and I was asked to teach a course on pastoral care. After the college hired me full-time and a couple of pieces of that material got published, I decided to turn the lecture material into a manuscript. I thought it would be helpful, especially to ministers in my denomination, to have a easy-to-read, practical guide for this difficult area of ministry.
