Don Marler Laddie and I spent fifteen years together from the time he was a twelve-week-old puppy in human years until he was fifteen years in human terms. (That would mean he was one-hundred and five dog-years-old.) The reason we bonded so closely was that we learned that both of us would always do our best to protect each other even if we might die while doing so. That mutual trust turned into a deep love that never went away.
Don Marler I get inspired to write by waking up every morning and beginning my search for a hero. Sometimes I find it is a little white puppy that grows up with one job in his life... to protect his master from violence. Another time, it was two beautiful actresses who chose to help orphans rather than bask in their fame as movie stars. Writing about heroes is a joy!
Don Marler I am currently working on an article and a book bout Sara O'Meara and Yvonne Fedderson, the wonderful women who started CHILDHELP organization to help abused children in 1959 and are still active in their work preventing child abuse.
Don Marler My advice for aspiring writers is to listen to your inner voice and avoid letting others dissuade you from proceeding with the story you want to reveal. I was told not to write about anything that has to do with child abuse because the subject is repulsive to the general public. After going ahead with my project despite the "naysayers," I learned that it is better to write for a particular group of readers who are receptive to your subject and not the general public if you want readers to read your book.
Don Marler The best thing about being a writer for me is that it gives me the opportunity to thoroughly research the subject I want to write. I can view my area of interest from different angles. By approaching the topic this way, I am able to integrate all of the information and come up with different ways to frame about the subject to speak to a specific audience. In the process, I get to enjoy increasing my knowledge in a particular area and know the truth about a given subject and at the same time, help my readers.
Don Marler The way I deal with writer's block is to stimulate my mind by constantly continuing to read about subjects that interest me and gaining new knowledge. I always have several areas that I would like to write about bouncing around in my head. My problem is that I don't have time to write about them all, so I am constantly prioritizing which is the most important to share with readers, next. IE...That way, I never get writer's block.
Don Marler It was a mystery to me how a little white puppy mysteriously came into my life the day before my fourth Christmas, after having been told my family was too poor to own and take care of a dog. During dental school, I heard about Ayn Rand and read her book, "The Fountainhead." By studying her philosophy of Objectivism and learning how to think, the answer to the mystery became evident and I wanted to write a book sharing my new understandings with my readers.
Don Marler At six years of age, I suffered from starvation and medical neglect. A two-hundred-pound welder attacked me. and beat me until I went unconsciousness. From that point on, my dog Laddie began risking his life to protect me. I promised myself that someday when I grew up, I would tell the world his story. Don Marler
