I try to find other things around the book that I can get involved in.
I ask myself (with the goal of completing the book in mind):
- What's blocking me writing?
- What other parts of the book can I write? i.e. another chapter?
- What else can I do that will lead directly to getting the book out there?

The freedom. These days the barriers to entry are so low. Anybody can start writing and get access to readers via Amazon (ebooks and print on demand services). Yes, the market is ALWAYS saturated. Yes, there are a load of poorly written books out there. Yes, it's difficult to get heard. But, nobody owes you a living.
I love writing (especially as in independently published author) because I have complete control over what I do with my content. I decide what it's called, I decide what goes in the book, I decide the price, marketing, print, ebook or both... everything! There's a lot to learn and I love learning.

Just start writing. Work out what you love. Work out a basic theme and purpose of the book. Think about the readers and what you want them to feel (or how you want to help them). Then go!
There are plenty of resources out there to get your book off the ground.
Also - think about what you really want to write for... what are your real goals? Why do you want to achieve these goals? By answering these questions, you'll find out if you really want to write a book and what sort of book you want to write.

The idea for Dad FC: Debut Dads - The First Season of Fatherhood came from a few places.
It took me a while before realising "Wow! I'm actually a dad and this little one isn't going away! She is completely dependent on me!".
Even then, it was about a year before I felt comfortable defining myself as a father.
Being the best dad I can be for my family, is the most important thing in the world to me. My family is the most important thing (it's what I live for), so everything else works around that core.
When it came to writing a book, it was bloody obvious to me that I should write about my experiences from my own point of view. If I pretend to be someone else, or write in a way that I'm not excited about, then I won't have the passion to follow it through. It'd be like writing an encyclopedia.
There are loads of parenting books out there, and even a good few books for dads now too. However, I wanted to make one that hit the nail on the head...
The first year of fatherhood is a big challenge - so write about this, to help dads who go through the same thing.
I love football - so keep it fun, unique and relate fatherhood to football. If somebody wants boring run-of-the-mill parenting advice, there are plenty of books for that. Football gives the book an identity and a theme.

I'd always wanted to write a book. I've also always wanted to start my own business. Doing these 2 things is only important to me if they're focused on something I'm truly passionate about (otherwise, what's the point?).
I had the time and mental space to sit down and write, during gardening leave. Seeing how other authors started out was very inspirational for me. I love to see how people go from nothing to something, from an idea to a fully formed book. This made me want to do it myself. To create something that brings other people joy is tremendously rewarding for me.
