I was making up stories to tell my children, and asked them what they wanted to hear about? Did they like magic, going to the beach, wizards, or fantasy or adventures?
I put all the things together they wanted to hear about and then, just kept going with the story telling, and evolving characters based on the feedback I received from my own children and their friends. There are some very common themes that are interesting to children and young adults.

I loved books and reading as long as I can remember, and somewhere along the line, I wanted to not just read books, but write my own stories and illustrate them...I started putting stories down on paper when my children were young and then we would illustrate them together on rainy day.
Now I like to just absorb the world around me, sometimes its walking on the beach, sometimes its reading books by many different authors, sometimes watching a movie just for fun....you never know when an idea pops is going to pop into your head....so you don't forget the thought, think about text messaging yourself the idea right when it pops into your thoughts!

I like letting my imagination run wild and wondering what mischief I would be up to if I was that character. And then I get to illustrate it too.
Being able work from my home studio, walk on the beach and dream up new ideas....then go home and put it down on paper...what could be better?

Just keep writing, reading and learning. Join writer and author organizations, network with other writers and join critique groups. Don't worry about what you don't know yet, just enjoy the process, learn something new every day and soon you will be an author. Just take one step at a time, and eventually you will make to the top of the mountain. And what a great journey to experience!
