Jeez, I don't know.
I guess for me it was important to have an idea, a rough story in mind first. Then, one must sit down and begin writing, anything, just write. Write as much as you can...then leave it alone for a while. When you feel up to it go back and read it and start to make changes or add to it. Now you're well on your way. Unless you are truly exceptional, don't expect to have a polished book finished in a week, or a month, or even after a year. Some days are easier than others. It's hard work. It is creative work and it takes time. If you stick with it, you will eventually succeed!
Keep writing!

Having said that, for me, I loved to tell my grandkids sci-fi stories and they were always the main characters. after I retired, retired, it was suggested I put one of my tall tales on paper. One thing led to another and I wrote and published Mission Proxima b. It took two years on and off...
My grandkids loved it. It is now a family heirloom and my grandkids have bragging rights.
So, my motivation was my grandkids. Being retired with time on one's hands also helped.
I will say this from my own experience. It's hard work! You cannot get discouraged and must stick with it, revision after revision. However, once it is published, all the time and hard work suddenly become worth it. Not so much for money, but for the fact that you achieved your goal, you crossed that finish line. You did it! You're now an author!! It does feel pretty good.
So, now I'm self-motivated to finish my second book!
Good writing and best wishes to all you aspiring writers out there. Go for it! (hide spoiler)]

Good question. I think it is different for everyone. For me, I have had several successful careers. I served over twenty-one years as a US Army officer, then as a senior executive for a large k-12 school district, in between those careers my wife and I owned a gourmet coffee shop for seven years and various types of real estate. Now, I'm finally retired, fully retired. I'm able to do pretty much what I want with my time. Of course, my grandchildren are a priority and thus they are my inspiration. I loved telling the grandkids stories and that eventually led to writing and publishing a real book where they are the main characters. It was that promise I made to them that kept me going. So, now I can add "author" to my resume. It felt pretty good. Surprisingly, my grandkids want another book...

It began three years ago when I was vacationing in Seattle with all of my grandchildren. I loved telling them stories and of course, since I have been a SciFi fanatic since high school, most of my stories were of that genre. My wife had noticed that during one of my storytelling sessions, the grandchildren became quite animated and really seemed to be enjoying the tall tale. She suggested that I put the story in writing to memorialize it. So, in two weeks I generated a twenty or so page story to share with them on our last day together. They loved it. They were the main characters. They insisted on reading their own parts and were totally immersed in the story. It was so much fun! My wife then suggested I write a book using that story as the basis for this book. Okay, why not I thought. Well, writing a book and telling a story are two very different things. Writing is much harder! The goal was to create a family heirloom. Something they might dust off sometime in the future and wonder what was I thinking. I promised I would write a book and three years later I crossed the finish line keeping that promise. It felt good! So, to finally answer the question, where did I get the idea for my most recent book. Well, I wanted to write a book with my grandchildren as main characters, their grandparents as supporting characters and it had to be a SciFi adventure. So, there you have it, Mission Proxima b: Interstellar Voyage, a SciFi adventure for all to enjoy.
