Sean K. Vlk For me, it's the reader's reactions. Nothing is more rewarding than having someone relate to, or despise a character you have written. Time was taken to make that character relatable or "hateable," so the relation to the characters is always appreciated. Moreover, when someone notices the subliminal themes just below the surface of the actual plot. In some work, such things can go unnoticed and its truly sad. The author takes time to intertwine their story and such elements, so it's quite the gradifying nod when a reader takes notice.
Sean K. Vlk Ideas come and go throughout the course of each day. I always have a notebook and pen by my side. As for actual writing is concerned, I take the time to sit down in my most comfortable chair, put on some music, and crack open my laptop and just write. Sometimes it's great. Sometimes it's not. The important thing is to write it. Always have the brain flowing with ideas. Sometimes mistakes lead to possibilities you had yet to consider previously. Penning a strong outline is always effective, however, sometimes deviation can be wonderful for a plot line; depending on the circumstances that is. Overall, to answer the question simply, I force myself into inspiration.
Sean K. Vlk I have always been a fan of the classic dystopians, Orwell, Huxley, Bellamy, and Bradbury. I wanted to pay homage to these greats while adding my own elements of contextual philosophy and psychology into the mix. In truth, I always loved a good "freedom" struggle. It's something that many have dealt with in the past, something many struggle with currently, and something many will certainly be dealing with in the future. In that sense, dystopian fiction will always be relevant as either a warning or an inspiration.
Sean K. Vlk Believe. Believe in yourself, in your work, in your abilities. Do not give up when things seem hopeless. If you love writing, truly love it with a fiery passion, you must pursue it. Personal accomplishment is rated not by your success, but by your own perception of what accomplishment is. Be proud of who you are. Be proud of your work. And if you are not, fix it. There's always room for improvement. Always. And at the end of the day, remember to read! The fastest way to improve your writing is by reading other works.
Sean K. Vlk For me, writer's block is a non issue. Not to say that it doesn't happen, just that there are ways around it. For example, I have about eight project ideas in which I have put into motion currently, therefore, if I'm stuck on one I simply move to another. I realize this isn't always possible, but for now, it seems to be working.
In the rare occasion where I simply cannot write anything, I instead focus on research until inspiration strikes me. To understand reactions, people's trauma, how things work, are all things authors take into consideration. As such, research in these fields does an author an incredible service to the realism of the characters or how certain obkects operate.
Sean K. Vlk The project I am currently writing is a work of horror. I have always been a fan of thrills, chills, and kills.
