I am currently working on a YA novel! I know, I know: big shift in genres! But, as Walt Whitman said, "I contain multitudes." I'm digging into another part of myself and having a lot of fun writing a YA novel. It helps that I taught in a high school for five years, too, so I have plenty of funny stories to draw upon. I don't always get inspired to write! Sometimes it's really difficult for me to sit down and write and I don't write every day. I usually find inspiration from other art––namely music. Sometimes, I'll be listening to a song––a pop song, a classical song, a rap song, whatever––and an urge to create will come over me. When I engage with work by other artists, it makes me want to create art, too.

I got the idea for my book, The War Requiem, from my experience singing the piece in my college choir. Even years after the last performance, I couldn't let the music go. I knew that the only way for me to truly move on would be to write about that experience. Very soon after I started, I realized that it was growing into a very long and complex piece.
