I give myself a project with self-imposed restrictions, or certain guidelines. For example: Write a story about a person in a bagel shop, who orders a bagel, sees the counter person put the bagel into the bag, but when they finally get home and open the bag, there's a cheeseburger in there instead of a bagel. And, the place does not sell cheeseburgers. Or, write a story about peer pressure and you can't use the words yes or no.
In art school, I found that if you have restrictions or certain guidelines that must be adhered to, that's when you become more creative. Your brain shifts into another gear looking for a work-around.

I have an outlet for the ideas that pass through my head. And it makes learning how to type in the US Navy seem like it was all worth it.

Write something and get it out there. Don't wait until it's perfect because it's never going to be. If you have a project, write down goals and timelines. Ex: finish first chapter, finish first draft, send to proofreader/editor, publish.
Just get it out there. Then you can second guess yourself and make the next book better.
Also, don't expect to get rich unless you're a master of marketing. I come to find that most self-published authors can't even buy themselves a nice dinner off the royalties they earned. But, you're book is out there and that's what matters.

I'm currently working on a book of short stories. Some stories were written about forty years ago, others are more recent. Some are experimental writings. It's one big smorgasbord. Hopefully people find something in there that they love.

Hypnogagia! My best ideas come when I'm in that state between dreaming and awake. My dreams are pretty crazy when I can remember them. In this state, I stay up and type once I get an idea in my head.

My best friend died in 2000. His sister, who is about nine years younger than he was, asked me to tell her about him since she never really got to know him. I had some of these "stories" written down so as not to forget our exploits. So I told her I would write a bunch of Tommy Stories and send them to her so that she can learn more about him from my point of view. We hung out together constantly in high school, went into the Navy together, and hung out a great deal when we both got out of the Navy.
Everyone I told these to thought they were fascinating, and they said that they liked the way I told stories, so I decided to try to capture that in a book since self-publishing was now available.
