I had a very long period of writer's block - years of just a complete drought. Near the end of it, I thought it meant I wasn't meant to be a writer. Looking back I can see what happened was I gave up on trying and just stopped writing. Everyone gets writer's block at some point or other. The secret to breaking through is to keep looking for the words.

Don't wait for permission. Don't give yourself restrictions. Stop thinking about writing and get out there and write.

Writing the Jade Tiger kicked off a very productive period of writing for me. The second book in the series is finished and in pre-production for release in January. The third book is underway and is on track for a summer 2021 release. I also just finished a short story featuring Penelope a month before the events of the Jade Tiger. "In the Lobby" is currently listed on Bookfunnel for free. I enjoyed writing the short story so much that I am drafting another which takes place between The Jade Tiger and book 2 in the series. I enjoy dipping into Penelope's world. It is an excellent distraction.

I don't wait for inspiration. I just write. Because the books are a part of a series, I am always thinking about what Penelope and Thom might be doing next, where they might go, or who they might meet. There are always three or four good ideas rattling about in my head when I start a mystery. I never know what is going to inspire an idea so I keep my mind open. Also, I listen to a lot of music and I read a great deal.

The character of Penelope came to me in a very detailed dream I had about a house party in the country. It was a different story than the one in Jade Tiger with the exception of her extraordinary vocal talents. It seems strange that her creation is such a cliché but it's true. When I woke up, I had a compulsion to learn more about Penelope. I couldn't help writing her story - I just had to know all about her.
