Roslyn Muir I'm reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn (again)! What are you reading?
Roslyn Muir And you thought writing was the hard part! Promoting a new book is challenging--especially the first time. The answer to your question, Carol, really depends on your genre and age range. There is a lot of advice out there in writer groups and you really need to pick what works best for you. I've tried a variety of things to promote my book and I think the best thing was arranging a book tour with a promotion company. It took place the first month of the release and really gave me momentum, interviews, and reviews. One thing I will do for the second book in The Chimera's Apprentice series is to get an ARC (advanced reader copy) team together so that they help me promote the book.
Roslyn Muir I'm writing book two of The Chimera's Apprentice series. It will be released early in 2021.
Roslyn Muir They say the best thing about being a writer is the moment your book is published. That's today...and it's a tad painful! It's like fingernails on a chalkboard all day long! Since it's my first novel, I know it will get better.
Roslyn Muir This story really started with the main character, Kyra. She was in my mind for quite some time, and I just kept developing her and the world. Then I was flipping through a book on Greek myths that I bought at a yard sale and came across the chimera. I was really intrigued by it—myths are stories that some writer made up thousands of years ago! So I was impressed by the variety of monsters that existed in the Ancient Greek psyche, and decided to incorporate the chimera into my story.
Roslyn Muir I've cultivated a habit of writing in the morning. I pour myself a coffee, grab some granola, and go back to bed and write. The daily habit of writing inspires me. When I'm deep in a draft I don't really need to force myself to the laptop. But I do get inspired by other books and art. It's great to fill the creative well by looking at a painting or reading a poem.
Roslyn Muir Fiercely protect your writing time. Carve out a chunk of time every day, even if it’s just an hour or less. Allow yourself to write crappy first drafts—you will make it better! Believe in yourself!
