When I was in sixth grade, we went on a two-night field trip. In the afternoon of the first day, I stepped out of the building and right into the basketball court, where some boys from my class were playing. One guy was saying, "Elaine is so--" just when I walked out. Another kid cut him off and I never learned the end of that sentence. It haunts me.

Most of my ideas start with a character or a person. LOOK WHAT YOU MADE ME DO started with the saying, "A good friend will help you move, a best friend will help you bury a body." I thought about a person who helped someone hide a body, thinking they were being a good friend, and then having that person turn the situation around and basically blackmail them into being a lifelong accomplice. What would that person do? How could they get out of that situation? And how could I make it really, really difficult?

This may sound odd, but my favourite book of all time is Robinson Crusoe, so I'd love to go and live on a deserted island. I'd never make it, mind you. I don't like seafood and I can't start a fire and obviously I'd prefer not to encounter a cannibal, but the peace and beauty of that idea have always appealed to me.
