Like a lot of people of a certain age, I’ve googled old friends I knew from before the Internet Age. Some were easy to find…but others seem to have utterly disappeared…or show up, depressingly, only in an obituary. What happened to them? What was their story? That seems like a custom-Made premise for a mystery.

Maybe Adam before The Fall...that must have been a pretty sweet setup. Maybe I could throw a big rock at the snake and prevent all the unpleasant after-effects.

It took me a moment to understand why there was blood in my oatmeal...and whose it was.

For my kind of writing (literary translation), writer's block per se is not an issue...the problem of the empty page has been tackled by someone else. The most important problem for me is to do everything I can to do justice to that writer's work.

There's another great recent Italian contemporary novel I'm trying to interest a publisher in.

I've been a fan of Italian fiction for many years now. I've translated several of Pirandello's short stories for journals, and I was on the lookout for something current. By chance I picked up a paperback collection of mystery stories ("gialli") at highway rest stop in Sicily during a recent vacation. One of the best stories in that collection was by a writer/journalist named Gaetano Savatteri. So that eventually led me to his novel "La congiura dei loquaci," which I very much liked and wanted to translate. Luckily I was able to interest the publisher Italica Press in the book.
