Skipping through the store with her pigtails flying, young Miranda happily took up her favourite fruit; all colours of the rainbow for the berries, bananas and apples.
But at the end of the aisle she froze, fixated, heart beating fast as school memories cascaded for the sight of the rifles on sale.

I'm currently experimenting with various styles. Perhaps the easiest introduction is You & I. I had a lot of fun writing it.
Accidental Prostitute, however, will likely always be my favourite. Of all the manuscripts I've written (many are currently undergoing editing) this was the most challenging, and by far the most experimental.
Very possibly, you wouldn't think it was the same author, as they are vastly different.

Accidental Prostitute may certainly prove to be easier as an audiobook, but only time will tell! I'm looking forward to publishing it at the end of October (2021). Anyone who adds that edition as "To Be Read" is more than welcome to contact me to participate in the ARC (jac.jb.buchanan@gmail.com or www.twitter.com.au/jacbuchanan_jb).
The voice-only approach (i.e. no sound effects) suits the pared-back, raw style of writing. It was a fantastic experience recording it.

Little known fact: I am no stranger to be stalked. This not only 'could be' a plot, but was the inspiration behind Sarah's backstory in You & I. To follow the backstory, follow the #TheJacJournal hashtag on Twitter.

Another short story (You & I). This one is traveling somewhere between an erotica and a romance, with a thriller edge.
Not as dark as Accidental Prostitute, the reader follows one narrator on a very human quest of self-exploration. It's written in an empowering rather than subjective manner, with a little humour for the all-important reader-character relationship.
Meanwhile, you follow a second narrator on their search for a serial killer, which is more earnest and less comical. This side was inspired by Kubrick, with a Tarantino-esque twist and closing sequence.
I'm hoping to at least have ARCs out by the end of October 2021.

The defining elements of Accidental Prostitute predominantly came from research on literary techniques and writing styles. That then pushed many changes including the structure and narrative of the story.
Others were defined by the genre. My favourite noirs have purpose behind absolutely every aspect, including execution. As a part of this included whether I defined gender and included visual prompts, which suddenly became very important. Symbolism, therefore, plays very strongly throughout the story.
