(view spoiler)[While visiting a relative in hospital earlier this year I got the idea to write a short story about a pre-teen boy, Andrew, struggling with bone marrow cancer. He is on vacation with his family and he wonders if he will live long enough to become a teenager. When Andrew is befriended by a young lady at the camp he learns that there's a right of passage many of the local teenagers celebrate by jumping off a lakeside cliff there, Jacob's Ladder. They hike together to climb Jacob's Ladder and vow to jump off it that summer. What happens in the story will bring tears to your eyes. My wife and I both wept when we read the page-proofs for The Last Campout. (hide spoiler)]

Being able to take readers on an emotional journey because you've created fictional characters that are believable and are facing challenges.

I'm reading Bruchko again. Written by Bruce Olson. I had the opportunity to meet with him in 1998 when he was at his publisher's office in Florida. He has an incredible testimony of how at the age of 19 he went on his own to South America to reach a stone age tribe of Indians, known to be cannibals'. Miraculously he made contact with them and survived and over the course of five years learned their difficult language so he could communicate with them. I highly recommend his book.

I was inspired to write my latest book, Daniel & the Mysterious Royal Dream, after reading the book of Daniel, found in the Bible, and listening to teaching from various people about this character. I wanted to write and illustrate a book that would introduce young readers to this prophet. Daniel was challenged by King Nebuchadnezzar who threatened to take his life if he couldn't explain a weird, puzzling, dream.

Four years ago, one evening, my cat disappeared into the shrubs on the hill behind our home. It didn't return like usual before I went to bed. A couple of days passed. There was still no sign of her. I started to worry. I thought an eagle from one of the tall trees across the river might've swooped down and taken her. A year went by before we saw her again. By chance I spotted her outside the youth hostel at the end of the road. She looked a little mangy but other than that was in good shape. The quests must've been taking care of her. What happened to my cat during that year it was away? This would be an interesting plot for a book.

I would have to say that Bill and Josella from The Day of the Triffids are my favorite fictional couple. The tragic events that brought them together and the struggles they faced trying to survive in a post apocalyptic world resonated with me. The sense of hopelessness and vulnerability I felt when I read it for the first time in high school was still as real when I read it again just a couple of years ago. After The Asteroid, my latest book, evokes some of the same emotions.

Thanks for your comment. Rob Milne is actually a coworker with me at the air force base where I work on Vancouver Island. He gave me permission to use his name for the lead protagonist in the Angelic Army Conquests series. He is not yet ranked as a Sergeant but is on his way.

To deal with writer's block I usually take a walk or run on one of the many nature trails nearby where I live on Vancouver Island.
If I'm doing research on a location one of my fictional characters travels to, I get creative ideas flowing by actually going there. This summer I ran 30km of the Cape Scott trail before I finished writing my most recent novella. The last chapter takes place at a lighthouse there.

Since I was a teenager I've had a strong belief in the existence of God, and heaven. My wife, Olivia, had a near death experience while she was in college, and was taken up to heaven for a short time. She told me about this after we were engaged. In recent years I've learned that life on earth is preparing us for eternity. The character we build now, is what we will take to heaven. In heaven we'll have a purpose, we'll have a job, we won't just be floating around on clouds playing harps. The main character in my book, In Heaven, has the heart of a warrior, this trait is taken with him to heaven, and he is recruited to fight with the angelic army, to battle demons, and watch over the life of a teenager back on earth.
