I give my brain "permission" to be inspired by having a small notebook on me or, at night, by my bedside. Often when I am entering sleep or coming out of sleep I sense a way forward in my current writing project. I never tell myself that I don't have to jot it down because I'm sure to remember the idea in the morning. The truth is that when morning comes, the idea has flown out of mind like a bird.

This depends on when in a writing project I sense a block. If it is at the beginning of a project, writer's block seems to be uncertainty on how to begin. What I try to do in that case is start writing and see what grabs me. If writer's block comes in the middle of a writing project, that seems to be an indicator that what I've written just before has lost energy. I go back a scene or two and see if there is a better way to proceed.

I write both fiction and non-fiction. My non-fiction books are interview-based and deal with advances in interfaith dialogue. The best thing about those books is listening to the amazing insights of my interview subjects and letting their answers, in turn, interview me.
The best part of writing a mystery series is letting my characters surprise me. They seem so much wiser than me.

I am currently working on the first mystery in a new series, featuring Allyson Worthy, the daughter of Lt. Christopher Worthy from the Christopher Worthy/Father Fortis series. Allyson is a no-nonsense FBI agent who has been loaned to the Rome office of the CIA to work on two assaults on Syrians in one of Italy's refugee camps. .

A few years back, my wife and I were lost as we tried to find our way back to our hotel one foggy night in Venice. Although Venice is one of Europe's safest cities, Venice didn't feel safe that night. The atmosphere was deliciously creepy.
