If it is at the beginning of a project, writer's block seems to be uncertainty on how to begin. What I try to do in that case is start writing and see what grabs me. If writer's block comes in the middle of a writing project, that seems to be an indicator that what I've written just before has lost energy. I go back a scene or two and see if there is a better way to proceed. (less)

The best thing about those books is listening to the amazing insights of my interview subjects and letting their answers, in turn, interview me.
The best part of writing a mystery series is letting my characters surprise me. They seem so much wiser than me. (less)

ARE YOU A WRITING ATHLETE? (These first blogs in the series pertain more to writing fiction. Non-fiction writing projects will be the focus of later blogs)
Part Two: BEGINNING TO SHAPE THE CLAY
In the first blog in this series, we compared writing to running a marathon with hurdles. Writing is like a marathon in that finishing a project takes time, patience, and perseverance. As is true of a marat Read more of this blog post »

“Noted American Orthodox theologian Alexander Schmemann maintained that God desires that we approach all aspects of life sacramentally. That is, there is nothing that God created that is inherently secular. The destiny of everything in this world is achieved when we recognize its capacity to connect us mystically with God.”
David Carlson, Peace Be with You: Monastic Wisdom for a Terror-Filled World

“He (Bresnahan-a potter interviewed in the book) described a recent trip to China. In every city he visited, he witnessed alarmingly high levels of inhumanity, pollution, and industrial development 'without any stepping back and saying, "How did we get here?" and "Where are we going?" He described what he witnessed in China as the turning from the 'propaganda of communism to the propaganda of absolute consumerism with not even skipping a beat.”

“Brother Stavros related a conversation that had occurred shortly after the 9/11 tragedy. He had traveled to Albany airport to pick up a prospective new member of the community....The man asked him if he didn't think that we were coming to, since 9/11, a huge conflict, a cultural conflict...he characterized Islam as representing violence, and Christianity as peace...But beyond that, what most frightened Brother Stavros was the man's 'absolute certainty' of what God would do, a trait mirrored in Osama bin Laden and radical Islam. Fundamentalism, it seems, is fundamentalism, wherever it is found. 'People get seduced by their absolutism, and absolutism then feeds on power, and then power, of course, leads to violence.”
