I would probably like to go to Norway or Sweden. Over the past several years, I have enjoyed reading novels from this area, as well as several movies and tv series that I have enjoyed. My visions of the area--the snow, the mountains, the overall landscape--I find intriguing.

I'm fortunate to have a family history that goes back hundreds of years in the United States. The first book I wrote dealt in part with the migration to Oregon. My great grandparents were on the Oregon Trail. The one I just finished, deals with the migration to Kansas and the fight over slavery there. The other side of my family migrated there.

Anyone who writes needs to realize that writing is really hard work. I've done many things in my life--dug ditches, poured concrete, cleaned bathrooms, hoed weeds, etc.--but writing if the hardest thing I've ever done. But, it also is can be unbelievably rewarding.

I write non-fiction, and to me the best thing about being a writer is sharing information, thoughts, ideas, and facts to readers. I write about history, and what I think is valuable is to share stories about the past in relation to the present. So, no matter how bad things seem today, 150+ years ago, our nation was in such a huge crisis, we fought a civil war. I hope by reading what I write, people will realize that dealing with issues is better than letting them simmer.

I'm the type of person who can perservere. There have been times when I've been stuck with a section of what I'm working on, but I can move on to something else. My problem is that often I know what I want to say, but am not sure how to say it, which is a little different, but not entirely different than writer's block. When I'm in that situation, I set my computer aside, get a writing pad, and just start writing long-hand. Sometimes I might mess up 10 pages to get one paragraph where I want it.

My family--my great, great, great grandmother, great, great grandfather, and my great grandfather settled in Kansas in 1855. While they did not settle in Lawrence, they were against slavery, and my great grandfather Isco Pony Sutton fought in the Kansas Cavalry in the Civil War. The family connection was the hook, but as I dug deeper, I was drawn into the huge struggle to ensure that Kansas would be a free state, and the antislavery settlers there would do whatever it took to end slavery in the United States forever.
