Judy Lindquist What a great question! If I am writing historical fiction, I try to base the character on a mixture of people from that era or event in order for them to feel authentic. That does require lots of research. For some of their more nuanced characteristics, I will definitely draw from my personal experiences and observations of those around me.

As a writer of children's fiction, being a teacher is a huge asset. After all- I am surrounded every single day by the people that read and populate my books! My students are a constant form of inspiration for me.

For example, my current, as yet unpublished manuscript is about a 3rd grader who suffers from test-anxiety. Over the years I have taught so many students who have great gifts and talents and yet struggle with the over-testing that many schools are required to do. This story is for them!
Judy Lindquist The best thing about having multiple projects in different stages of the writing process is that when I hit a block on any project, it allows me to shift focus and work on something else for awhile. Usually some space and time will help me to come back to it with fresh eyes, which always helps.
Judy Lindquist The best thing ever is talking with kids who have read your books. My vocation is getting kids excited about reading, writing, and history, and that all comes together through my books and my work as an educator.
Judy Lindquist Write! Write! Write! Get feedback. Then write, write, write. Get more feedback and write some more!

Also- you MUST be an avid reader.
Judy Lindquist I have several projects in different stages. I am currently researching for an historical fiction novel set during the Civil War in Florida. I am currently working on the first draft of a middle grades contemporary novel. I am revising two different manuscripts. And I have several projects I am sending out to agents and publishers, ( and at this point, still collecting those rejections!)
Judy Lindquist I first started writing books for children as an outgrowth of my work as an educator. I use children's literature in the classroom constantly, and when there were topics, themes, or content I wanted to use and it was not out there, I thought- well, why don't I try to write it!
Judy Lindquist My most recent published book, Flower Power, was inspired by my students. Spending my days surrounded by elementary school students is the most inspirational environment ever!!!!
