I am a teacher who writes and a writer who teaches! My vocation is to get kids excited about reading, writing, and history.

Although I grew up in the northeast, Florida has been my home for more than 30 years. It did not take long once we moved here, to fall in love with my new home-state! The history, the architecture, the flora, the fauna, and the interesting people. What's not to love!

A book worm and a history buff, these two passion came together in my first two historical fiction novels. Both were published by the Florida Historical Society, and are on the recommended reading list for several Florida counties.

If I am writing historical fiction, I try to base the character on a mixture of people from that era or event in order for them to feel authentic. That does require lots of research. For some of their more nuanced characteristics, I will definitely draw from my personal experiences and observations of those around me.

As a writer of children's fiction, being a teacher is a huge asset. After all- I am surrounded every single day by the people that read and populate my books! My students are a constant form of inspiration for me.

For example, my current, as yet unpublished manuscript is about a 3rd grader who suffers from test-anxiety. Over the years I have taught so many students who have great gifts and talents and yet struggle with the over-testing that many schools are required to do. This story is for them! (less)

Usually some space and time will help me to come back to it with fresh eyes, which always helps. (less)
