Debra Merchant
Debra Merchant asked Judy Lindquist:

How do you create your characters? Are they based on people that you know?

Judy Lindquist What a great question! If I am writing historical fiction, I try to base the character on a mixture of people from that era or event in order for them to feel authentic. That does require lots of research. For some of their more nuanced characteristics, I will definitely draw from my personal experiences and observations of those around me.

As a writer of children's fiction, being a teacher is a huge asset. After all- I am surrounded every single day by the people that read and populate my books! My students are a constant form of inspiration for me.

For example, my current, as yet unpublished manuscript is about a 3rd grader who suffers from test-anxiety. Over the years I have taught so many students who have great gifts and talents and yet struggle with the over-testing that many schools are required to do. This story is for them!
